Hi All,
We are heading into the end of August. Let’s get organized and set accomplishable goals!
There were 12 volunteers who worked at the Project GREEN Gardens during week 15. Here is the list of Project GREEN’s exceptional gardeners in attendance: Dhyana Kaufman (1-hr, Monday, 8/12), Jim Peters, Lisa Haverkamp, Susan Ahrens, Cindy Parsons, Monica Hoherz, Evelyn Frey, Hetty Hall, Pat Yeggy, Vivienne Benson, Larry Allen, and moi. Everyone stayed two hours unless otherwise noted. As we gathered together, it was 68 degrees. The Garden’s rain gauge recorded .2 inches of rain since we last met. Volunteers’ goals today were weeding any of our favorite flowerbeds and filling the Little Free Library. Notice I did not mention watering. Mother Nature has done a fine job watering without Project GREEN’s help this year. I requested volunteers be on their way home by 11 a.m. as the temperature (75 degrees) and humidity were quite uncomfortable. Ah, summertime in August…
Here is the list of active 2024 Project GREEN volunteers compiled by Pat Yeggy. Pat has lovingly titled the group “Bee Section.” Please let Pat or me know of any corrections or changes.
Our pictures taken during week 15’s work session are of Project GREEN Garden’s Triangle, Quilt, and Circle flowerbeds. Each bed is different from the others and a lovely presentation along Park Road. Some of our plants didn’t survive the rigors of spring and needed to be amended in number or completely replaced. Since healthy plants are obscuring Project GREEN’s signage, we need to move signs to more open spaces.
The first group shows the Triangle.
The next group of pictures show the Quilt (French marigold border with beautiful coleus squares inside) and the Circle (pie shaped sections with white or blue annual salvia). In the center of the Circle is a very happily growing Voodoo Lily.
Read on for an announcement from Linda Schreiber:
“Johnson County Planning, Development & Sustainability developed a Pocket Prairie Program as a grant program for residents living in unincorporated areas. Twenty grant recipients will attend a program on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m., at the Iowa City Public Library in meeting room A. The public is invited to this free program. Linda Schreiber has assisted Kasey Hutchinson, JC Planning, Development & Sustainability, with PPP. The material that will be presented includes information about the new prairie garden at Project GREEN Gardens.”
Please consider attending the Tuesday program at the ICPL!
Here are the numbers after 16 weeks at the Project GREEN Gardens: Weeks 1 – 14 + Week 15 = 663 1/2 hours + 23 hours
= 686 1/2 hours! Many thanks to Project GREEN volunteers for their tireless, weekly efforts to beautify our favorite Iowa City park.
Our next work session is Monday, August 19 from 9 – 11 a.m. Good news! Weeds will be easier to pull after all our recent rain! Looking forward to seeing volunteers tomorrow. Until then, happy gardening! Diane
P.S. We will set Week 16’s goals at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
