This is the current radar for our neck-of-the-woods. It appears we’re in for some weather, but who knows??? Cindy, Nick, and I spent a total of 7 1/2 hours this morning watering at the Gardens. None of us will resent time spent watering that Madame Nature soon might provide from above. Come on rain!!
Hi All,
It was a grand morning when 16 Project GREEN volunteers + master gardeners met on Monday, June 1 at 9 a.m. Everyone was ready to continue planting and get to watering. Peonies were deadheaded. We’re still organizing our new water system. Poison ivy was discovered and removed. Cranberry bushes fell and discussions were centered on what would be best to replace them.
Ed Rinderspacher joined us and provided lots of good ideas. He planted 2 Korean Spice Viburnums with a Shenandoah Switch Grass between behind each of the three new park benches along the hiking/biking trail and near the new entrance at Project GREEN’s second pillar. Ed also moved LOTS of mulch to flowerbeds for volunteers to spread. Discussions continued with Pat Yeggy about labeling plants. We had two new volunteers, Mo Harding and her sister-in-law, Jerri Harding. Welcome and thanks to all for joining our Week 5 efforts! Like I remarked earlier in this paragraph, it was a GRAND morning!
Some volunteers stayed until noon. Otherwise volunteers donated 2 hours to our efforts to beautify the Project GREEN Gardens. Some volunteers had collected extra hours since we last met. I’ve done my best to record individual times. Those in attendance were: Cindy Parsons 7 hours, Diane Allen 5 1/2 hours, Jerri Harding, Mo Harding, Chris Ostrander 3 hours, Nick Goergen 4 1/2 hours, Kara Frankman Master Gardener hours, Pat Yeggy 4 hours, Rina Sjolund 2 1/2 hours, Monica Hoherz and Paul Hoherz 14 hours, Laura Bonifazi Master Gardener hours, Sue Mullins 6 hours, Jim Peters 6 hours, Lisa Haverkamp Master Gardener hours, and Susan Ahrens. Who is available to check my addition? Just remembered, I now receive 3 hours for writing this summary. PGG volunteers are extra-ordinary!
As I watered the Triangle this morning, I noticed a couple additions to the PGG. Two limestone benches have arrived for park visitors to sit-a-spell while bird watching at the new bird birdblind. Check it out for yourself next time you’re at the PGG! Sit-a-spell…

Here are the numbers after 5 weeks working at the Project GREEN Gardens. Weeks 1 – 4 + Week 5 = 319 1/2 hours + 59 1/2…
= 379 hours for Project GREEN volunteers for Week 5!
Please remember to keep track of your extra time spent until we meet again on Monday, June 8 at 9 a.m. If we do not get rain (please no!) I’ll need volunteers for Saturday morning. Please let me know if you have a few hours to stand and water by hitting “Reply All”. Once we have three volunteers, no need to apply.
That’s it for now. Wishing all a wonderful weekend. Happy Gardening! Diane
