Hi All!
It’s possible we might need to cancel our Week 12 tomorrow (July 20) as there are storms forecast. Please remember I will cancel our work session by 7 a.m., so keep an eye out for a message from me if the weather looks bad. I will also be watching the air quality tomorrow making sure our breathing conditions will be safe.
There were 14 volunteers who signed in this past Monday morning, the beginning of Week 11 at the Gardens. Many chose to begin at 8 a.m., as the temperatures were forecast into the 90’s. The 8 a.m. temperature was 73 degrees and the 9 a.m. temperature was 77 degrees. The 10 a.m. temp was 80 degrees and 11 a.m. it rose to 83 degrees. Whoo-ee, our day looked to be a HOT one! The air quality was 65, called moderate and the rainfall since last week (7/6 through 7/12) was a BIG zero. Those in attendance were: Diane Allen 5 hours, Nick Goergen 2 hours, Linda Bergquist 2 hours, Rina Sjolund 1 1/2 hours, Mary Laughlin 2 1/2 hours, Erin Buscher 2 hours, Cindy Parsons 5 hours, Lisa Haverkamp master gardener hours, Kara Frankman master gardener 1 hour, Precious Pate 1 hour, Ariah McGinnis 1 hour, Chris Ostrander 2 1/2 hour, Monica Hoherz 3 hours, Jim Peters 8 1/2 hours.
On Tuesday, July 14 a party occurred to celebrate Project GREEN’s art installation of “Lunar Horizon, a moon gate”. We met at the Ashton House patio and enjoyed our time outdoors in the shade. We also celebrated our three year volunteer, Nick Goergen, for his time weeding, watering, planting, driving Fern, using Auggie to dig, and more along with the rest of the Project GREEN volunteers. Our time together has gone quickly. Of course, Nick was the creator, builder, and installer for “Lunar Horizon.” Here is a message from Nick along with a special picture. The message was sent to Cindy and me after the Tuesday party, but I’m pretty sure he would want to share it with all of you.
“Thank you so much for the lovely send off tonight. I’ll cherish my time in these gardens for the rest of my life! I look forward to visiting Project GREEN when I can to say “hi” and see what mischief you all have gotten into!”
Please take time to visit “Lunar Horizon” and read the two plaques glued onto the limestone. Nick has moved to Seattle, WA.
Doesn’t the Quilt look pretty this year? Good job to the volunteers for their careful planting and caring for our Queen sized Quilt!
Our newest blue bird house has an occupent! Roger Swartz created and installed this delightful home for any blue bird wanting to live at the Gardens. Mary Laughlin and I know the secret door to check the nest and eggs. We’ve learned it takes 12 – 14 days for blue bird eggs to hatch.
A gentle reminder to all our active volunteers: Please start planning your 2027 garden(s). It’s time to look at gardening magazines and the internet for new ideas along with proven plants to order. Our Project GREEN 2027 orders are due to Dawn Bouslog at Pleasant Valley Greenhouses at the end of August.
Here are the numbers after 11 weeks working at the PGG. Weeks 1 – 10 + Week 11 = 635 hours + 36 hours + 3 hours typing this essay
= 674 hours for Project GREEN volunteers!
